This is that part of dentistry that deals with the treatment of the supporting structures of the teeth that is the gums, bone, tongue, and cheeks.

Periondotitis is an inflammation of periodontium and is caused by bacteria that accumulate between tooth and gum tissue. It is required that this bacteria has to be removed regularly unless it will cause a condition called Gingivitis, which is the inflammation of gum tissue.

Gingivitis may be caused by:

• Poor dental hygiene
• Smoking
• Diabete
• Avitaminosis, etc.

Periodontitis may cause your gums swell and bleed easily. Timely treatment will help you avoid looseness of teeth and tooth loss.

Moderate cases of periodontitis can be treated by a non-surgical approach called Root Planning. In these cases the bacteria will be cleaned away without reflecting the gum. In severe cases you will need to treat it with Periodontal Flap Surgery. This is done with a surgical procedure involving the reflection of the gum from the infected teeth to provide direct access and visibility to facilitate a thorough cleaning of all the infected root surfaces.

Lasers have been used in dentistry to treat a number of dental problems. These lasers that are used in Dentistry are different from the cold lasers used in phototherapy, i.e. for the relief of headaches, pain, and inflammation.

Dentists are using lasers to treat:

Tooth decay: Lasers are used to remove decay within a tooth and prepare the surrounding enamel for receipt of the filling. Lasers are also used to "cure" or harden a filling.

Gum disease: Lasers are used to reshape gums and remove bacteria during root canal procedures.

Biopsy or lesion removal: Lasers can be used to remove a small piece of tissue (called a biopsy) so that it can be examined for cancer. Laser are also used to remove lesions in the mouth; and relieve the pain of canker sores.

Teeth whitening: Lasers are used to speed up the in-office teeth whitening procedures. A peroxide bleaching solution, applied to the tooth surface, is "activated" by laser energy, which speeds up of the whitening process.

Laser therapy offers many advantages in surgery, periodontics, root therapy and pain therapy. In surgery, a laser beam is used instead of a scalpel to make an incision in the gum. This procedure usually causes no bleeding and is much less painful, or even completely pain-free. So you may not require anaesthetic at all and you are only left with a micro-scar that is not at all unsightly. Clinical studies have shown that when a laser is used in root therapy, the teeth remain firmly anchored for longer. Soft lasers can be used to treat aphthae, herpes labialis and even problems with the temporomandibular joint.

• EFFICIENCY: Laser improves work efficiency drastically. As a non invasive and non rotating tool, it is more precise and thus more effective.
